Comb-Patterned
Vessel, ca. 40003000

Take a closer look! This ancient earthenware container was made in the early stages of the development of Korea's ceramic industry. It is unglazed, unpainted, and somewhat porous, therefore not watertight. It was hand-built of coils of clay that were smoothed and then incised in a geometric pattern with a comblike tool while the clay was still soft. Much more advanced technology would have been required to create a high-fired vessel such as the cobalt-painted jar, decorated with a brush and coated with a translucent glaze. |
