Frederick
Childe Hassam was born on October 17, 1859, in Dorchester, Massachusetts.
His ancestors had settled in Massachusetts in the 1600s. The name “Hassam”
comes from the English name Horsham. The future artist was named Frederick
for his father and Childe (an old English word for shield or knight) for
an uncle. Childe Hassam liked the confusion caused by his last name, which some people mistakenly thought was an Arabic name pronounced with the accent on the second syllable (“hass-AM”). |
