Perspective Light Color Form Motion Proportion
How many details are painted in the color red? Find the shirt, pants, sleeves, cuffs, scarves, and cape all painted bright red.

Leutze surrounds the central boat group with the color red. This keeps our attention on the primary subjects: Washington and the flag. Notice that there are no red areas in the background or in the other boats to distract our eyes from the foreground activity. Compare this use of red to its use in these two paintings below.
