In 1835 Ingres returned to Rome to serve as director of the Académie de France at the Villa Medici. There he entertained a number of guests including the virtuoso pianist and composer Franz Liszt (1811–1886) and his mistress, Comtesse Marie d'Agoult (1805–1876). After the countess gave birth to the couple's third son on May 9, 1839, Ingres presented the new mother with this portrait drawing. She kept it all her life, even though her relationship with Liszt ended just a few months later.
