 | For
a brief period when they were both studying in Jacques-Louis David's studio, Ingres
and François-Marius Granet (17751849) shared a work space in a Parisian
convent. Granet departed for Italy in 1802. When Ingres arrived four years later
as a winner of the Prix de Rome, the two became reacquainted. Granet, in the meantime,
had discovered an enthusiastic market of collectors and tourists who vied to purchase
his paintings of church interiors, crumbling
ruins, and landscapes. Over time, Ingres grew jealous of Granet's success.
The two eventually resumed their friendship back in Paris in the 1830s.
