 Napoleon I on His Imperial Throne
Ingres's depiction of the new emperor recalls imperial Roman imagery, Byzantine mosaics, and Carolingian coins and ivories, such as this plaque. Here, the Virgin of the Annunciation holds a spindle and distaff. Her military appearance may symbolize the church triumphant or Virgo militans.
