Fulton (1765–1815) was a near-contemporary of Moltedo, and in this bust, sculpted in Paris in 1804, he is shown dressed in a nearly identical manner. A painter and inventor, Fulton posed for Houdon while visiting Paris in a fruitless attempt to enlist funding for his submarine invention. Moltedo, too, was an inventor, credited with a fire engine and a machine for spinning hemp. Back
