 Agnolo Bronzino (Italian, 15031572)
Portrait of a Young Man, ca. 1540
Oil on wood; 37 5/8 x 29 1/2 in. (95.6 x 74.9 cm)
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
H. O. Havemeyer Collection, Bequest of Mrs. H. O. Havemeyer, 1929 (29.100.16)
 Amédée-David, Comte de Pastoret
Ingres adapted Pastoret's swaggering pose and disdainful expression from this portrait by Bronzino, which belonged at the time to Lucien Bonaparte, the emperor's younger brother. The resulting air of aristocratic hauteur is perfectly in keeping with the character of the sitter, who was notorious among his contemporaries for his unrestrained ambition and pretentiousness.
