In this work, a small, somewhat comical self-portrait of the artist giving the Nazi salute is pasted on the same sheet as a separate watercolor of the sky, which, according to the artist, has been wounded by shots.

Kiefer also used the"Heil Hitler" salute in a 1969 series of staged photographs of himself wearing paramilitary costumes while posed before historical monuments or in romantic landscapes. While his salute is authentic, it is at times slightly skewed or limp-wristed.
