This wet-on-wet watercolor demonstrates a more romantic approach to the Vistula theme. The work relates to another 1980 Kiefer watercolor, "Yggdrasil," in which stags run across the scene in front of tall conifers. In Old Norse legend, stags gnaw at the buds of the World Ash, called Yggdrasil.
