Unlike most of Kiefer's watercolors, this example is built with successive layers, as are his large paintings. Over a curving landscape, Kiefer has added a layer of graphite pencil strokes that appear to cancel out the underlying scene. Broken lines and dabs of red paint lie on top of these strokes. The method evokes the sensuous quality of the poem after which Kiefer named this work, "Gebrochen Blumen und Gras" by the Middle-High German poet Walther von der Vogelweide.
