The Battle of the Hogen Era was a fierce fight that lasted only a few hours in the summer of 1156. The story focuses on the decline of the once supremely powerful Fujiwara aristocrats and the rise of the two military families—the Minamoto (also known as Genji and identified by a white banner) and the Taira (also known as Heike and identified by a red banner). These two clans fought each other on behalf of two rivals, Go-Shirakawa and Sutoku, for the imperial throne, .
