The Battle of
the Hogen Era was a fierce fight that lasted only a few hours
in the summer of 1156. The story focuses on the decline of the
once supremely powerful Fujiwara aristocrats and the rise of
the two military families—the Minamoto (also known as Genji
and identified by a white banner) and the Taira (also known
as Heike and identified by a red banner). These two clans fought
each other on behalf of two rivals, Go-Shirakawa and Sutoku,
for the imperial throne, .
