Oil and encaustic on canvas
Gift of J. Pierpont Morgan and Henry Walters, 1909 (09.176)

Beginning in the 1860s with his illustrations of allegorical subjects, La Farge usually strove to portray ideal themes in naturalistic terms without compromising the traditional flatness of decorative works. This picture, possibly a study for a mural, combines a volumetric allegorical figure with a sketchy background that shows a specific Newport landscape, including Bishop Berkeley's rock.
