Atjema Standing.
Probably Saqqara; Sixth Dynasty (ca. 23232150
B.C.E.). Painted limestone; H. 35 7/8 in. (91 cm). Egyptian Museum, Cairo
(CG 99).
With his large mouth and strong facial lines, Atjema's face is
particularly vigorous. The surviving color fully conveys the lifelike
impact of the statue. A number of traits, including the narrow waist, small hands,
and unusual wig, link it to works of the Sixth Dynasty, but whether it was created at the very end of the Fifth Dynasty or the beginning of the Sixth is impossible to say at present.
