Jar Inscribed with
the Name of King Unis. Fifth Dynasty, reign of Unis (ca. 23532323
B.C.E.). Egyptian alabaster; H. 6 3/4 in. (17 cm). Musée du Louvre,

This vase is carved with an image and inscription that promise
renewed life to Unis from the god Horus. On one side, the title "King
of Upper and Lower Egypt" is carved above the cartouche with the
king's name, which is flanked by ankh signs for eternal life
presented by two cobras, the emblem of royalty. Carved on the other
side is a falcon with outstretched wings, the symbol of Horus, holding
the hieroglyph of eternity in its claws.
