Potter. Said to be from Giza; Fifth Dynasty, probably reign of Niuserre (ca. 24202389 B.C.E.). Limestone with remains of paint; H. 5 1/4 in. (13.2 cm). The Oriental Institute of The University of Chicago (10628, 10645).

With one hand the potter shapes the rim of a typical Meidum bowl while with the other he turns the wheel on its base. His emaciation speaks of the harsh conditions of labor for some. Three small separate vessels associated with this figure are not wheel-made forms and probably represent jars of water and pigments needed by a potter at various stages of his craft.
