Naturalistic Details

Egyptian art characteristically demonstrates a keen observation of nature. Although proportions and poses of sculpture were based upon strict conventions, subtle indications of musculature and bone structure suggest the artists were well aware of anatomy.

Notice the slight swelling of the abdomen, the structure of the hips, and the advancing left knee that presses against the dress.

The sleek form of the crouching lion has been idealized and simplified, yet is completely natural in proportion and anatomical structure. The face of the king seems individual and displays signs of age, features unusual in royal sculpture particularly.

 Nowhere is this attention to detail more evident than in the way Egyptian artists depicted animals.
