The Rising Sun
The Egyptians saw a parallel to the human cycle of birth, death, and rebirth in the afterlife in the daily cycle of the sun, which was born in the east and died in the west, only to be reborn the next day.
| The mummy of Khnumakht was placed on its side inside the coffin so the ba could look out through the eyes toward the rising sun, symbol of rebirth. |
Pectoral of Princess Sithathoryunet As god of the rising sun, the cosmic sky god Horus is depicted wearing a headdress with the sun disk. In the form of two falcons, he flanks the king protectively and grants life and dominion to the king, whose presence is symbolized by his name. |
