A Prehistoric Myth

Comb
Elephants, giant snakes, storks, cattle, dogs or jackals, and perhaps a group of pigs line up in horizontal rows on this ivory comb. The mythologies of many African peoples associate elephants and serpents with the creation of the universe. It could be that this scene pictures a similar kind of myth. By the beginning of the historic period, elephants were near extinction in Egypt.
