Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen believe that sculptures transform the landscapes around them. They also think that the landscapes can change how you see the sculptures. Over ten years ago, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen were commissioned to create a large-scale sculpture for a new corporate headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio. They came up with the idea for an enormous stamp to sit on a pedestal or "pad" already in front of the headquarters. When the corporation cancelled the commission, the City of Cleveland told the artists they would like the stamp to be placed in front of City Hall.
