The shape of this enamel bowl alludes to the plump, rounded form of a ripe
plum. Fruit, leaves, and branches are rendered in repoussé in high
relief. Covered in a deep purple enamel, the surface of the plums
varies as light hits it, giving it an iridescent sheen reminiscent
of Tiffany's glass. Like many of his enamel forms, the shape relates
closely to his pottery. The design drawing for this bowl survives,
with annotations by Julia Munson, who was in charge of the enamel
shop. Her notations indicate that the piece took fifty hours to
make.
