Only a small number of small delicately carved wooden objects are known from the Tiffany Studios. The careful workmanship and innovative designs make them some of Tiffany's most unusual creations. This box retains the irregular shape of the wood. The primary motif is a scarab, the body of molded glass, with the wings finely carved in low relief and the claws holding the box's bronze hinge, which represents the sun disk. The interior features the bronze monogram HJG of the donor's father, who was mayor of New York from 1889 to 1892.
