This vase, with its irregular, openwork design, recalls similar work in porcelain made by the Bing and Grøndahl factory in Copenhagen. The poppy, a motif Tiffany incorporated into windows and lampshades, is depicted here in its complete life cycle: in bud, in full bloom, and gone to seed. The flower was a favored design for turn-of-the-century artists, not only for the expressive possibilities of the plant itself but also for its association with the dreamlike state induced by opium.
