An artist has painted a small color rendition of the tapestry design. This will be reproduced to scale on a large sheet of paper that is the exact size of the finished tapestry. This large-format drawing is called a "cartoon," and in this case the cartoon consists of outlined shapes, each one identified with a number that corresponds to an area of color in the sketch.
