Underneath the loom, each harness is tied to a treadle that the weaver can operate with her feet to raise an individual harness. This creates an opening in the warp threads called a "shed." Since there are two treadles and two harness assemblies, the weaver can create two sheds, one with odd warps rising and one with even warps rising.
