Cross-hatching
Building up of a tone (a shade of a color) by a series of parallel lines crossed by other lines at an angle.
Gouache
A water-based paint made opaque (not transparent) by the addition of
white paint.
Graphite
Basically, a pencil.

Laid paper
A type of paper, typically hand-made, that has a visible grid pattern over the entire sheet. The wire screen on which the paper is made produces the pattern.
Linear perspective
A mathematical technique for making objects on a flat (two-dimensional) surface look like they are getting farther away.
Quill pen
A pen made from the tail or wing feathers of the goose, swan, and crow. The tip of the feather is cut with a penknife to a fine or broad point.
Reed pen
A pen made from hollow-barreled grasses such as bamboo.
Value
The degree of lightness or darkness of a color.
Volume
An object’s bulk or mass.
Wash
An area of diluted or transparent ink, applied with a brush.
Wove paper
A handmade paper made on a woven screen made from wire mesh or fabric. The impression of the woven screen can be seen when light is shined through the paper.
