AcknowledgmentsThis online exploration was created in conjunction with the exhibition "Master Hand: Individuality and Creativity among Yoruba Sculptors" (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, September 11, 1997 - March 1, 1998). This exhibition examines the parameters of individual creativity and innovation within an important African artistic tradition. Approximately fifty wood sculptures are displayed, including masks, containers, freestanding figures, and architectural posts that are attributed to individual Yoruba master sculptors from Nigeria.
The exhibition is made possible by the Friends of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas and was organized by Alisa LaGamma, Assistant Curator, The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Online Exploration:
Rebecca Arkenberg, Deborah Howes, Jori Rosenfield, Serena Totman.
Special thanks to Liz Bigham, Barbara Burn, Paul Caro, Bob Dickey, Alisa LaGamma, John Roberts, Masha Turchinsky, Edie Watts, Yitzak Zahavy, and the Photo Studio at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
