Pen and Parchment: Drawing as an Art Form in Medieval Manuscripts - Sunday at the Met

The exhibition Pen and Parchment: Drawing in the Middle Ages delves into the powerful, seldom-seen work of medieval draftsmen, including drawings created long before the Renaissance, in settings as diverse as ninth-century monastic scriptoria to the fourteenth-century French court. Jonathan Alexander presents a talk about the techniques, aesthetics, and role of graphic images—drawings, maps, diagrams, and masterful manuscript decorations—in the creative and intellectual life of the Middle Ages.

Jonathan Alexander, the Sherman Fairchild Professor of Fine Arts at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University
