The exhibition Pen and Parchment: Drawing in the Middle Ages delves into the powerful, seldom-seen work of medieval draftsmen, including drawings created long before the Renaissance, in settings as diverse as ninth-century monastic scriptoria to the fourteenth-century French court. Jonathan Alexander presents a talk about the techniques, aesthetics, and role of graphic images—drawings, maps, diagrams, and masterful manuscript decorations—in the creative and intellectual life of the Middle Ages.
