New Trustees James W. Breyer, Howard S. Marks, Beatrice Stern, and Caroline Diamond Harrison Elected at Metropolitan Museum

(New York, November 12, 2014)—Four new members—James W. Breyer, Howard S. Marks, Beatrice Stern, and Caroline Diamond Harrison—have been elected to the Board of Trustees of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, it was announced today by Daniel Brodsky, the Museum’s Chairman. The election took place at the November 12 meeting of the Board.

In making the announcement, Mr. Brodsky said: “We are delighted to welcome to the Board four exceptional individuals who have attained recognition in diverse fields. In addition to their respective records of outstanding professional achievements, our new Trustees share a passion for art and a deep commitment to education, the arts, and philanthropy.”

Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of the Metropolitan Museum, continued: “The Met has never been more actively involved in connecting our global collections to a global audience. Our Board's support and leadership are key to the Museum's success, and I look forward to working with our four new Trustees, all of whom are visionaries in their own fields.”

James W. Breyer
James Breyer is Founder/CEO of the investment and venture philanthropy firm Breyer Capital and a long-time partner at the venture capital firm Accel Partners.

Mr. Breyer led Accel’s investment in Facebook in 2005 and served on the Board of Directors from 2005 until 2013. He is a Director of 21st Century Fox, and private companies Etsy, Circle Financial, and Legendary Entertainment. He has previously served on the boards of leading companies including Wal-Mart and Dell Inc. He is also on the Committee of IDG China Funds and the Investment Advisory Board of Tsinghua School of Economics and Management in Beijing.

A long-time trustee of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Mr. Breyer is also a fellow of the Harvard Corporation, Harvard University’s governing board. While a junior at Stanford he studied in Florence, Italy, in what is now the Breyer Center for Overseas Studies and Renaissance Art. Additionally, Mr. Breyer is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. At the Metropolitan Museum, he and his wife, Angela Chao, are members of the Chairman’s Council.

Mr. Breyer graduated with distinction from Stanford University and earned his MBA at Harvard University, where he was a Baker Scholar.

Howard S. Marks
The investor Howard S. Marks is co-chairman and co-founder of the global asset management firm Oaktree Capital Management. Previously he held leadership positions at Citicorp Investment Management and The TCW Group. He is well-known for his memos on investment strategy and for his book, The Most Important Thing: Uncommon Sense for the Thoughtful Investor.

Mr. Marks received a bachelor’s degree in finance cum laude from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA in accounting and marketing from the Booth School of Business of the University of Chicago, where he was awarded the George Hay Brown Prize.

He serves on the Board of Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania and from 2000 to 2010 was chairman of the University’s Investment Board. He also chairs the Prince’s Drawing School in Britain.

Together with his wife, Nancy, Mr. Marks is a member of the Chairman’s Council at the Metropolitan Museum. He collects in a wide range of areas, including European paintings, drawings, and decorative arts; Islamic art; Chinese art; and modern paintings.

Beatrice Stern 
Beatrice Stern has worked in galleries and museums in Paris and New York. She headed the Appraisals Department at Sotheby’s Paris from 1996 to 2000 and was with the Old Master Paintings Department at Sotheby’s New York until 2013. She was a Vice President of Sotheby’s until earlier this year and at present, she chairs Sotheby’s International Advisory Board.

Ms. Stern has a graduate degree from the Ecole du Louvre and studied at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.

She is a council member for New York Presbyterian Hospital, a board member for the Morgan Library and Museum, and an international council member for the Musée des Arts Decoratifs and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.

She collects 18th-century French furniture and decorative arts. 

Ms. Stern is the daughter of Metropolitan Museum Trustee Emeritus Michel David-Weill. 

Caroline Diamond Harrison 
Caroline Diamond Harrison is the publisher of the Staten Island Advance, Staten Island’s largest print newspaper, and its affiliated website SILive.com. She will represent the Borough of Staten Island on the Board.

Ms. Harrison is an alumna of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. As a college student, she was an intern at the Staten Island Advance, writing feature stories and covering fashion events. From 1986 to 1989, she took part in an Executive-in-Training program at the Times-Picayune, the Pulitzer prize-winning newspaper of New Orleans. She was general manager of the Patriot-News in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, from 1989 to 1999. Returning to the Staten Island Advance in 1999, she was general manager until 2004, when she succeeded her father as publisher.

She is an active member of the Board of Overseers for the Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth College. She is also a trustee at Staten Island Academy, and is deeply involved in business and community activity in Staten Island. She serves as a board member for Richmond County Savings Foundation, Alliance for Audited Media, and the Mutual Insurance Company.

She is the daughter of Alice Diamond, who served as the Staten Island Representative on the Museum’s Board from 1989 to 1994.
