New York City Scholastic Art & Writing Awards to Be Exhibited at The Met

Original art and writing by 2019 Gold Key Recipients on Display in The Met’s Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education

The nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers and The Metropolitan Museum of Art have announced the opening of the fifth annual New York City Scholastic Art & Writing Awards exhibition at The Met’s Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education. This special exhibition is free and open to the public during regular Museum hours from March 22 through May 27, 2019. There will be an opening evening event for students, family members, and educators on Friday, March 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. with remarks by Virginia McEnerney, Executive Director, Alliance for Young Artists & Writers; Sandra Jackson-Dumont, Frederick P. and Sandra P. Rose Chairman of Education at The Metropolitan Museum of Art; and Joel Towers, Executive Dean, Parsons School of Design. This reception is also open to the public.

The exhibition features more than 600 original works of art and writing from New York City-based Gold Key recipients in the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the country's longest-running and most prestigious award and recognition program for creative teens. This year, students from all five boroughs in grades seven through twelve (ages 13 and up) submitted more than 12,500 works in 29 categories to the New York City regional program of the Awards, representing nearly 300 schools in all five boroughs.

“Each year this exhibition so beautifully highlights the exceptional originality and talent of our City’s youth,” said Sandra Jackson-Dumont, the Museum’s Frederick P. and Sandra P. Rose Chairman of Education. “It’s a celebration of their accomplishments, dedication and discipline.  It also emphasizes The Met’s unparalleled collection of human creativity across time and place.”

All works were blindly adjudicated by accomplished creative and literary professionals based on originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal vision or voice. The awards have honored distinguished artists since 1923, including Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, Kay WalkingStick, John Baldessari, Luis Jiménez, and Catherine Murphy, whose works are in The Met collection.

“For the fifth year in a row, we are honored to showcase the artistic and literary talents of New York City teens at The Metropolitan Museum of Art,” said Virginia McEnerney, Executive Director of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. “This annual exhibition celebrates and validates the work of our young artists, writers, and innovators, and we are proud to share their diverse and profound talent in this year’s exhibition at The Met.”

The NYC Scholastic Awards are  administered by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers in collaboration with The New School’s Open Campus, Parsons School of Design, and Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts. The 2019 New York City Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Exhibition at The Met is presented, in part, with generous support from Scholastic Inc., The New York Times, Blick Art Materials and Utrecht Art Supplies, Robert Lehman Foundation, American Eagle Outfitters Foundation, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
