Surface Tension: Contemporary Photographs from the Collection

This installation of works from the permanent collection surveys the various ways in which contemporary artists direct our attention to the physical surface of the photograph, playing with the inherent tension between flatness and the illusion of depth. Among the works featured are photographs that have been scratched, burned, or painted on, as well as cameraless images made by placing objects directly on photographic paper.

True Story (2004, re-edited 2008)
Robert Frank, director. Using scenes shot in his homes in New York and Nova Scotia, along with photographs and excerpts from previous films, Frank reflects on his life (26 min.).

These films are shown in conjunction with the special exhibition "Looking In: Robert Frank's The Americans."
