Like other Parisian theaters, the Théâtre Français, where this scene is set, enticed urbanites to see and be seen. Wearing the concealing garments appropriate for an afternoon outing, Cassatt's self-possessed model drinks in her surroundings. She is indifferent to the gaze of the man scrutinizing her from another loge. The asymmetrical composition, broad planes of pigment, and quickly brushed distant forms are Impressionist devices that Cassatt had recently begun to adopt.
