William Bouguereau (1825–1905) was among the leading academic painters who taught at the Académie Julian, the most popular school for aspiring American artists in Paris. Chalfant, who was enrolled at the Académie from 1890 until 1892, portrayed students focusing intently on their renderings of one of the two nude models in a crowded classroom. The life studies in oil and charcoal in the foreground are typical weekly exercises.
