Carolus-Duran (1838–1917) was a successful society portraitist and a popular teacher. Sargent began studying with him in spring 1874 and soon became his star pupil. Enlisting techniques he had learned from his mentor—and proclaiming their shared admiration of Velázquez and Hals— Sargent depicted him dressed in the flamboyant attire that was his trademark and highlighted on his lapel the rosette of the Order of the Legion of Honor. At the 1879 Salon the portrait was praised for its deft characterization and awarded honorable mention.
