Walton (1843–1915) and Beckwith met when they were studying in Carolus-Duran's Paris atelier in the mid-1870s and became close friends. Painted in Beckwith's studio after both Americans had returned to New York, this incisive portrait reveals Carolus-Duran's influence. The beautifully dressed Walton, holding the seemingly inevitable cigarette, is posed before Beckwith's Impressionistic landscape paintings and his fencing mask.
