Cassatt painted this portrait of her mother in casual morning dress shortly after her parents and sister settled in Paris in 1877. It reflects the artist's interest in women pursuing everyday activities in elegant interiors. Fluent in French and engaged in current events and culture, Katherine Kelso Cassatt (1816–1895) reads Le Figaro, a conservative newspaper known for its articles on politics and the arts.
