This canvas appears to be Cassatt's first major treatment of the maternal theme, on which she would concentrate after about 1890. Cassatt linked the two figures by gaze and gesture. Although the child appears solid and heavy, the artist's bold brushwork reminds the viewer that the only physical objects here are canvas and paint.
