Eakins's father, Benjamin (1818–1899), was a successful writing master who taught penmanship at Friends' Central School in Philadelphia. The portrait reflects the affection of Eakins's Parisian teachers, Jean-Léon Gérôme and Léon Bonnat, for Rembrandt's works. In March 1889 Eakins sent the painting to the Salon along with The Crucifixion and Mending the Net (1881; Philadelphia Museum of Art). Only The Writing Master was shown—in the 1890 Salon.
