Music making, one of Eakins's favorite artistic themes, is here manifest in his image of Rudolf Hennig (1845–1904), a distinguished cellist who settled in Philadelphia after studying at the Leipzig Conservatory. When the Pennsylvania Academy purchased the painting shortly after its completion, Eakins split the $500 fee with Hennig. At the 1900 Exposition Universelle, Eakins received an honorable mention for this painting and for Salutat (1898; Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts).
