A label on the back of this canvas is inscribed La Maison de Claude Monet Giverny. Visiting in May and June 1886, Metcalf apparently spent time with the French master and his family and painted his own version of one of Monet's favorite recent subjects—a field of poppies in bloom. The old farmhouse nestled into the landscape hints at cozy rural domesticity while the informal composition, rapid brushwork, and vibrant dabs of red paint announce Metcalf's interest in Impressionist experimentation.
