Having worked outdoors during summer 1888 with John Singer Sargent in England, Bunker returned home with a keen awareness of sunlight effects and a more fluent technique. These are apparent in his picture of brilliant early autumn chrysanthemums in the greenhouse at Isabella Stewart Gardner's suburban residence in Brookline, Massachusetts. As Mrs. Gardner was Bunker's friend and an adventurous supporter of the arts, her garden was a perfect place for him to indulge his new passion for Impressionism.
