Stuart painted this replica of the Lansdowne portrait for William Bingham, who had commissioned the original. Evidence that it is indeed the replica and not the original is found in Bingham's account book as well as in the picture itself. There is a slight lack of detail in the face, especially around the jaw and chin. The furniture and drapery have the appearance of being copied: the perspective is sometimes incorrect and, for example, the position of the front left leg of the chair and details of the drapery on the table are less accurate. The carpet is imprecisely painted and appears less intense in color. These differences from the original may indicate the hand of an assistant, but that has not been confirmed.
