This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to reunite these portraits of James and Dolley Madison, which have been in separate collections since 1849. Madison (17511836), elected fourth president of the United States in 1808, was secretary of state in Thomas Jefferson's administration when he sat for Stuart in the spring of 1804.
