The images in this feature have been enabled with technology which allows visitors to see the fine details of each work.

To "zoom in" and explore the details, select an image repeatedly with your mouse.

To return to the full view of the work immediately, select the "Back to full view" icon:
To return to the full view frame by frame, select the "Zoom out" icon:

Pop-Up Windows

The images in this feature have been placed in pop-up windows. To access a pop-up, select an image with your mouse; to close a pop-up, select the gray "x" in the bottom left-hand corner of the window.

Footnotes and Bibliography

Throughout the feature, footnotes are indicated in blue, as superscript numbers. For example:

"Alas! This man will never do anything, for he begins by thinking about the end before the beginning of his work."2

To view the footnote, select the number with your mouse. The text will then "anchor down" to the corresponding footnote:

  1. Vasari-Milanesi 1906, vol. 4, p. 47: "Oimè! Costui non è per far nulla, da che comincia a pensare alla fine innanzi il principio dell'opera."

To return to where you left off, select the blue "Up" arrow at the end of the footnote ().

To see the corresponding bibliographic entry, "scroll down" the page to the end of the Footnotes section and select Bibliography, as follows:

For references, abbreviations, and sources, see the Bibliography.

Select the letter of the last name of the author for whom you are looking, or browse the Bibliography.

To return to the Footnotes section, select the "Back to" link at the top of the Bibliography page, as follows:

Printing Options

The following icon appears when a printer-friendly version is available for a section of this feature:

Select the icon to view the page, then choose "Print" on your browser.
