Description

Description

This Italianate scene was orginally framed (the nail hole was drilled at a later date). The composition was probably adopted from a painting by the Delft landscapist Pieter Groenewegen (ca. 1600–1658?), as were the landscapes on the wall and on the lid of the instrument in Vermeer's Young Woman Standing at a Virginal of about 1670–72.
