Description In 1799, Blake began a series of fifty "small pictures from the bible" using a richly textured glue, watercolor, and tempera technique he later dubbed "portable fresco." This scene shows Zacharias, high priest of the Temple, struck mute upon learning that his elderly, barren wife, Elizabeth, will give birth (to St. John the Baptist). Against the dark background, which may have been inspired by Rembrandt prints, the glittering menorah and luminous garments of the priest and angel appear to glow. |
