Description
From his rough foreground seat, the diminutive figure of St. John prepares to record the apocalyptic vision unfolding before him. A towering angel swathed in light, his fiery feet astride the earth and sea, presents the heaven-sent text; seven horsemen (who embody the seven thunders signaling God's announcement) charge through the clouds behind him. Blake's design of the angel may have been inspired by the ancient Colossus at Rhodes. The subtle coloring, stippled watercolor technique, and extensive pencil underdrawing indicate that it was executed toward the middle of the series.
