The Treasury of Basel Cathedral

Description
Several objects dispersed after the 1836 auction at Liestal eventually ended up in public collections but were not identified as having come from the Treasury for many years. Although this ewer, for example, had been in the Kunsthistorisches Museum since 1932, it was only in 1957 that it was identified with "a small crystal ewer given by Hartmann Münch." The donor, who probably inherited the ewer from his father, was the bishop of Basel from 1418 until 1422; the portrait head from his funerary monument is also on display in this exhibition. The figure of a kneeling monk on the lid is a visual play on the family name.
