Description
Bonnard planned to exhibit a screen depicting women in gardens at the 1891 Salon des Indépendants. Just a few days before the Salon opened, the artist decided that the panels would work better as a series of individual paintings. He dismantled the screen and entitled the group Decorative Panel 1. 2. 3. 4. Thus his first decorative series was presented to the public.
These paintings are preparatory studies for two of the four final panels, now known collectively as Women in a Garden (Musée d'Orsay, Paris). The studies are the same size as the final versions but are more finished.
