MMA Burton photo TAA1340

These elaborately detailed, miniature gold canopic coffins, inlaid with glass and semiprecious stones, are masterpieces of the goldsmith's art. The coffins are covered with a feather pattern and the interiors are inscribed with spells. They were placed inside the compartments of the alabaster canopic chest, to contain the mummified viscera of the king. The erasure of the name of Neferneferuaten and its replacement with that of Tutankhamun on these coffins indicates that, like the Egyptian alabaster heads of the canopic box, this canopic equipment was originally intended for another royal burial.
